A Gem Among the Wheels

Having a teenager comes with many worries, and among them is safety matter in all aspects of life. I held my daughter off from driving for as long as I could. First, it was a matter of paying too much insurance fees for having a teenage driver in the house. Second, she was able to have one less pressure from her friends to drive aimlessly around. Third, we needed time to test drive potential cars, and finally, deciding on the type of car she would be able to afford.

By the time my daughter turned 18, we have tested lincoln, mercedes benz, audi q7 tdi, and volkswagen new beetle. I know, these cars were on the high end of the spectrum for us, but test driving them gave us a sense of what we were looking for. Believe me, we looked for a long time, online, and off line to dealers until we were exhausted.

We checked out the car encyclopedia for nissan, and others that we were interested. At the end, we settled for this used Volkswagen for all the right reasons. Being a college student, she only needed a set of wheels that she can relies on to get to work and school, nothing fancy!

Her heart was set on having a truck for its size, and feel of safety, but we could not find a decent one for the set price we had in mind. Nevertheless, she was contented with her new first car after a few zippy trips on the road.

  1. I remember those days well. My boys were very reasonable, though, and were quite willing to accept my hand-me-downs. My youngest, Jeremy, now 25, and a Cal Poly grad is still driving his "grannymobile." My mom gave him her Plymouth Acclaim when her vision began to deteriorate. It only had about 10,000 miles on it and my girlfriend and I flew to GA and drove it back for him. He used it all through college and is still driving it. He tells me "it thinks its a Toyota." He likes it because he's 6'4" and it fits him well.

  2. I count on practicality the most, I think you got a right choice. A car shouldn't be so fancy, it needs to be functional enough to bring you to places. Always be careful driving!!!
