Chef Academy

Contributed by Johnny Graves

Even though I am an ardent Food Network viewer, my favorite baking themed TV show of all time is actually on the Bravo network. Called Chef Academy, the show follows renowned French chef, Jean Christophe Novelli, as he makes the move to Los Angeles and opens up a test program for an elite American culinary institute that both trains and transforms novice cooks who aspire to cook like professionals.

The show has Novelli selecting nine students to undergo his course. Each week the students are assessed via a variety of tests from gutting a fish to making bread from scratch. They are also asked to recreate some of Novelli's signature dishes. Those that can't make the cut are in danger of not graduating while those who flourish are given the chance to cook the main dishes in the launching party for the American version of the Novelli Academy by food critics from newspapers and magazines, restaurant owners and chefs.

Novelli is strict and his heavy accent made him difficult to understand, but that was part of the shows charm. Another key drama point was that many of these chefs had their own creative cooking juices that didn't always mesh well with what Novelli considered as his standard. I caught all nine episodes on Directv HD Deals and I definitely encourage others to do so as well.
